STARTING POINT

v HOW TO USE THIS WEB SITE AND APPLY TO SCHOOL:

First -- Read the Seven MBA Admissions Criteria

Learning the seven elements of your application is a great way to get oriented and see how admissions officers will evaluate your candidacy.  Read through the seven elements and start working on those that are most important.

Second -- Send for Your Applications

Or find them online.  Increasingly, schools are turning to online applications. They're easier to process and less expensive than printing and mailing brochures.  Virtually all schools have downloadable applications that can be found at the school Web sites.

To find applications to the top 25 schools, check out our Download MBA Applications page.

Third -- Take GMAT Seriously

If you hope to attend a top MBA program you'll need to do well on the GMAT.  I don't care what the admissions people say about weighing all of the admissions criteria equally.  If you don't do well on the test, you won't get a fair hearing.  All of the admissions numbers prove it.  That's why if you hope to attend a top school, the GMAT has to be your first priority.

If you haven't test taken the test, start studying now.  Take a prep course if possible and buy a good GMAT book if not.  The Official Guide for GMAT Review is easily the best for practice problems, but it's very hard to find the book in stock.  (We'll sell some of our copies as long as they last.  To buy one click here.)

You can also read through our GMAT Forum, but don't fool yourself about the level of preparation you'll need. Invest in a good course and a good prep book, and try to avoid the fly-by-night GMAT prep sites that have appeared on the Web.

Fourth -- Read Through the Application Essay Questions

Start the brainstorming early.  Most applicants will run through five or six drafts of each essay, but remember that good writing is a result of good planning.  So brainstorm first.  Write out all ideas that enter your head and develop those that seem most promising.

Fifth -- Get Your Transcripts and Recommendations

There is nothing more frustrating in the application process than missing a deadline because your transcripts or recommendations don't arrive in time.  Read through our section on MBA recommendations and get the process started now.

Sixth -- Apply as Early As Possible

Applicants in the early rounds have a significant advantage in being admitted and in getting financial aid after being admitted. Be sure to make the earliest possible application deadline.
